535 Incorrect Authentication Data

The “Server says: 535 Incorrect authentication data ” error occurs when the SMTP authentication details for the user that you have set in your email settings are wrong. You may receive the SMTP error 535 when you are logging into any email client like Microsoft Outlook. In such cases, you won’t be able to send emails from your email client. Consider the guidelines given below to resolve the issue.

  • Step 1: Log in to your email account from your browser.
  • Step 2: Change the password of your email account.
  • Step 3: Make sure to set a secure password, which has at least the minimum number of characters as recommended by your email service provider, and is a combination of upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Step 4: Once you have changed the password, go to your email client and change the password of the email account.
  • Step 5: Verify whether you are able to send emails.

If the issue persists, follow the steps that are given below to resolve the issue in Gmail and Groupmail.

In Gmail:

  • Step 1: When you are trying to compose and send an email message, you will receive the error 535 incorrect authentication data showing the message is not delivered.
  • Step 2: It will prompt you to check the Send mail as feature in the Settings.
  • Step 3: Go to the Admin dashboard, and click Apps.
  • Step 4: Navigate to the G Suite section, and select Gmail.
  • Step 5: On the Gmail Service page, click End User Access.
  • Step 6: Select the Allow per-user outbound gateway option.
  • Step 7: Checkmark the Allow users to send mail through an external SMTP server when configuring a from address hosted outside your email domain option. Then, click Save.
  • Step 8: Now, go to your Gmail settings and select the Accounts tab.
  • Step 9: Click the edit info link in the Send mail as section.
  • Step 10: Confirm your email address and click Save Changes.
  • Step 11: Your issue will be resolved in 24 hours since the SMTP server settings will take time to propagate to all users.

In Groupmail:

  • Step 1: Go to Tools menu from your Groupmail.
  • Step 2: Select Manage Accounts and click Modify.
  • Step 3: Navigate to the Delivery Options tab, and checkmark the Requires Authentication option. 
  • Step 4: In the Account Properties window, select the Setup button under the SMTP Server section.
  • Step 5: When the Authentication window appears, checkmark the Use SMTP Authentication (outbound) option.
  • Step 6: Enter your email address in the username section and type your password of the email account. Then, click OK.
  • Step 7: Go back to the Account Properties window, and select the Advanced tab.
  • Step 8: Under the SMTP Domain section, select Use Custom Name and enter the domain of the email address. Then, click OK.
  • Step 9: Save your changes by clicking OK, and close the Account Properties window.
