How To Enable Mail Enabled Security Group?

A mail-enabled security group is used for distributing messages and for granting access permissions to resources in Active Directory. You can enable (create) mail-enabled security groups using Exchange Admin Center (EAC) . It takes around 2 to 5 minutes to complete the process. For detailed instructions about how to enable mail enabled security group, go through the steps below.

Using Exchange Admin Center

  • Step 1: First, sign in to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 using your account.
  • Step 2: Click the Admin tile and select Admin centers in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • Step 3: Alternatively, go to the left-side panel and click Admin centers –> Exchange.
  • Step 4: Select the Exchange option from the drop-down list.
  • Step 5: Click the Recipients tab from the left-side panel and select Groups –> Mail-enabled security.
  • Step 6: Click on Add a group and carry out the on-screen prompts.
  • Step 7: Under the Choose a group type section, select Mail-enabled security and click Next.
  • Step 8: Below the Set up the basics section, enter the necessary details and click Next.
  • Step 9: Go to the Assign owners section and click + Assign owners.
  • Step 10: Select the group owner from the displayed list and click Next.
  • Step 11: Under the Add members section, click on + Add members.
  • Step 12: Choose the group members from the list and click Next.
  • Step 13: Input the group email address in the Edit settings section and configure the following.
  • Step 14: Privacy
  • Step 15: Add Microsoft Teams to your group.
  • Step 16: Finally, verify the details in the Review and finish adding group section.
  • Step 17: Click Create group and then select Close.

Using Exchange Online PowerShell

  • Step 1:In general, the security group is created in the default OU and so anyone can join the group with approval from the group owners.
  • Step 2:To begin with, type the following in the PowerShell window.
  • Step 3:New-DistributionGroup -Name "File Server Managers" -Alias fsadmin -Type security
  • Step 4:To review the information about the new mail-enabled security group, type the following command in PowerShell.
  • Step 5:Get-DistributionGroup | Format-List Name,RecipientTypeDetails,PrimarySmtpAddress
