ProtonVPN Connection Failed

Why My ProtonVPN Connection Failed?

Surfing the internet or doing an online transaction over a public Wi-Fi makes your personal information accessible to strangers or hackers who might also be connected to the same network. So, using a VPN (virtual private network) would ensure online privacy by creating a restricted network. VPN hides your IP address so that no one can trace your online activities. Sometimes, you might face ProtonVPN connection failed while you try to connect to servers through your VPN. If you are using ProtonVPN on your Windows computer and facing a connection issue, then this article will help you fix it.

Solution 1: Check The Internet Connection

At times, you may not be able to access the internet while connecting to a VPN server. In such cases, check if you have a stable internet connection. Visit a random website in your web browser and check if it loads. If the desired website doesn’t load, then there is an issue with your Internet connection. So you have to restart your router and check if the internet connection issue is fixed.

Solution 2: Check The credentials

If you are connected to the internet, but not able to log in to your ProtonVPN client, then check the login credentials that you have entered. Make sure to enter the correct credentials and check if the ProtonVPN connection failed error is fixed.

Solution 3: Reinstall The TAP driver

In your ProtonVPN Windows client, if you are able to log in, but not able to connect to a server due to connection issues, then reinstall the TAP driver on your computer. The steps are as follows.

  • Step 1:Click the search box and type ‘device manager.’
  • Step 2:Double click the relevant option from the search result and open Device Manager.
  • Step 3:In the Device Manager window, go to Network adapters and right click on TAP-ProtonVPN Windows Adapter V9.
  • Step 4:Click on the Uninstall option.
  • Step 5:Now, download the latest TAP driver from the official ProtonVPN site and install it.

Solution 4: Restart Or Reinstall Your VPN Client

Sometimes, VPN client errors might be blocking you from getting connected to the server. In that case, restart your computer.

Still, if the connection gets failed, uninstall ProtonVPN, then download the latest version and install it on your computer.

Solution 5: Check The DNS Settings

Improper DNS settings on your computer could also lead to connection issues. If you suspect this to be the cause of the connection issue, open the Command Prompt and enter the following commands.

  • Step 1:ipconfig /release
  • Step 2:ipconfig /flushdns
  • Step 3:ipconfig /renew
